ars longa gallery inside, a comfortable place to view and purchase artworkThe Ars Longa Gallery is located on historic Sutter Street in old town Folsom, North East of Sacramento in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

When asked what type of work we carry, the word that most often comes to mind is: honest. We offer artwork that is true, work that honors the viewer, not designed for a formulaic tug at the heart strings. We look for artwork with a great sense of color and design, and are especially drawn to that which causes what James Joyce, in "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man" called aesthetic arrest. Work that touches the universal within each of us.

Each of our artists are talented, which should be expected. However, equally important and often overlooked is the kindness, dedication, the ability to see clearly, and to express truly. The energy that propels a work of art into existance cannot help but affect the viewer and the surrounding area. Notice how your body feels when you stand in front of artwork... calm? peaceful? agitated? angry? hopeful? grateful? Each work can provoke a reaction based on what we bring to it.

In art, energies mix: those of the viewer with those of the artist. The heart is somewhat more open when viewing art than many other daily experiences. Our goal is to provide art that can help neutralize negative pressures, restore balance and encourage harmony. Although the concept of beauty has received a beating in our culture, it really does heal. As Keats said: Beauty is truth, and truth, beauty.

Many of our gallery artists studied under Ron Lukas or Sergei Bongart, or students of theirs. Their work is based on the style of Russian Impressionism, which, like the French, uses color and light to model shapes, but with a bit more definition of form. This is a type of work that you will often see here.

However, we offer a good deal of other wonderful work that differs from the Russian Impressionist style. These pieces--bronze, pastel, egg-tempera, gouache, acryic, mixed media--are by exceptionally talented artists whose work I am honored to display.

The gallery is open Wed - Sunday 12 - 5 -- later on Thursdays (7:30), Friday and Saturday (9:00) -- but please call for an appointment if you are making a special trip.
